CHAPTER TWENTY

Silence enveloped the little clearing where Daniella knelt in the damp grass. It was late, but moonlight drifting through the filmy clouds illuminated the area around her, keeping the darkness at bay. She’d chosen this place for its seclusion. Even if someone were to look out the highest window in the castle, they would not be able to see her here.

Her heart pounded against her chest; her palms were slick with sweat. The fear shamed her and worse, it was dangerous. What she was about to do required strength and control, any sign of weakness could mean her death.

Gazing into the blue flame of the dragon tallow candle, Daniella spoke the invocation. A shimmer rippled the air before her. She curled her hands into fists to stop their trembling, but she could do nothing about the low cramp in her stomach or the sour taste of dread in the back of her throat. The urge to flee beat against the inside of her skull, but she fought against it. Behind her, the tethered goat bleated pitifully.

The ground beneath her vibrated as the air on the other side of the candle split down the middle. It was a sound much louder than when she’d opened the small rift to let the imp out. This tear was taller than a man and twice as wide. Beyond its edges lay a desolate landscape of red rock, broken in the distance by a ragged range of mountains. Hot, sulfurous wind blew against Daniella, pushing her hair back from her shoulders.

A solid form, shimmering black against the crimson backdrop, stepped forward from the aether. Where the nightmare’s silver hooves touched the ground the grass withered and died. The air itself seemed to shrink away from around the demon.

Daniella lowered her gaze. She must show strength, and yet also be meek. She had pressed her powers to the limit in summoning such a high level demon, she mustn’t risk angering it. “I bring you an offering.” She reached back and untied the goat, then pulled it forward. The creature resisted, digging its hooves into the ground and making the most awful sounds, almost like human screams.

Daniela drew the dagger from her bodice, twisted around, and slashed the goat’s throat. Warm blood splashed across the front of her dress. Her hands were soaked in it. For a moment she sat there with her fingers clutching the dagger, afraid to face the demon again and find the goat was not enough.

An icy breath puffed against the back of her throat. She turned slowly to find the nightmare’s face inches from her own. Fear slammed into her chest, stealing her thoughts. Then the demon lowered its head.

Triumph was a heady rush, chasing away the terror coursing through Daniella’s veins. She had done it. She had actually done it. Where before the urge had been to run and cower and hide, now all she wanted was to leap up and shriek her triumph to the skies.

But as she had contained her fear, so too could she contain her elation.
